Top SEO Tips For Web Developers

For those lucky enough to have built up an extensive knowledge of both web development and different CMS programs, building a website probably seems like a piece of cake. However, when it comes to building a successful website, the ‘building part’ is only half the story. If you want the website you create to appear in the upper reaches up of search engine rankings, and not down in the depths of double figure pages, it is important that you build you site with SEO in mind.

If you don’t know much about SEO however, never fear, you’ll be pleased to hear that you don’t have to be an SEO grand master in order to build a website which will rank well (although it would help!). All you really need to know is a few key tips…

Simple design – Sometimes the best things are the most simple. And in no case is this truer than for website SEO. By giving the websites you create a simple design and a solid site structure; the more appealing it will be to google bots, not to mention your visitors as well.

Organised URLs – In order to achieve a good SEO ranking for your website, it is vital that you give it a clean and straightforward URL structure. This means using semantic URLs which have meaningful names, and where possible, implementing your target keywords into the topic name.

Easy navigation – This is something which most web developers strive to do anyway, in order to create a good user experience; however it’s worth a special mention as navigation can have an impact on SEO as well. The easier a site is to navigate, the easier it will be for search engine crawlers to track the site.

Don’t abuse the Java – Much like in life, too much of a good thing can sometimes be harmful, and this is true for JavaScript in website building. Too much of it, especially if you are using it on a static website, can have a negative impact on SEO ranking. This is because it makes a search engine crawlers job really difficult to crawl the page. So the moral of the story- be kind to the crawlers, and they will be kind to you!

Content is king – When it comes to SEO, nothing is more important than content. By simply making yourself aware of how the content will be structured, and how to deal with keywords and Meta tags, you can greatly improve SEO. As well as the content on a page, images are really important too; so try and make sure the images you use are small in file size, and all have alt tags with a detailed file name containing a relevant key word.

Web development and SEO are two things which go hand in hand. They complement each other perfectly and when you get it right, it can be a match made in heaven.
